POLWEL initially was known as Kinloss Retail Shop. A Police Welfare Shop was set up in 1980 to ensure that essential household products and appliances could be purchased on credit at low interest rates. The shop was named "Kinloss Retail Shop".
In 1995, the name Kinloss Co-op Society Limited was changed to POLWEL Co-operative Society Limited.
